v-moda earphones mini review

As an iPod owner, one of the first accessories I would look to purchase is a new pair of earphones. The supplied earphones are competent but the iPod is able to deliver some very good audio quality, especially at high bit rates, and these earphones just can’t do it justice. Looking to address this issue, V-Moda have a couple of designs aimed at the consumer market.

v-moda remix m-class
This earphone is in similar design to the original Apple iPod earphones however the similarities end right there. This earphone is made from a polished alloy metal giving a reasonable weighty and solid feeling earphone and ensuring you of its excellent construction. The design is attractive with its choice of three colours and perfectly matching plug and cord – the latter of which is sealed in a translucent plastic giving it a durable and quality feel. While a simple design, this earphone remains aesthetically pleasing but that all means nothing if the audio performance is not up to scratch.
The first thing I noticed is that these earphones will play loud; you can achieve noticeably higher volume levels over the standard Apple phones which will quite literally be music to the ears of people who feel their iPod is a little on the quiet side. The music range is also quite noticeably improved giving decent levels of bass for this type of earphone and a good overall listening experience. Listening to a couple of test tracks encoded using the Apple Lossless codec, I found good levels of detail throughout the audio spectrum although the highs were perhaps not as clearly presented as I would have liked.

Included in the package are three pairs of white earpads and the modawrap cable manager – ultimately a separate piece of moulded silicon that lets you wind your earphone cable to a desired length or to help with storage. If you like the design of the original Apple earphones or don’t like in-ear canal earphones and are on the lookout for an inexpensive replacement that will improve your listening experience, remix m-class is well worth a look.

v-moda bass freq
This earphone follows the in-ear canal design that is popular for offering a better sound than standard style earbuds as well as a certain degree of noise cancellation making them great for listening to music on a flight or crowded subway. As seems fitting for a v-moda product, these earphones are nice looking with their large range of two-tone coloured designs with the plug and cord also following suit. Due to their plastic construction however, they don’t feel as well constructed as the remix m-class phones and the cable is lighter and thinner as well although I suspect this is to help avoid the cable noise you can get with this style of inner ear phone.
On first listening, it is great to see that this construction has no negative impact on the audio quality and again, these phones are loud. Listening to a particular track, I had my volume level at half way whereas with my personal in ear phones, I would need to crank it up between ¾ and full for the same. These earphones quite clearly take less effort to drive them at loud volumes than others I have tried and offer an advantage for those looking to get some extra volume out of their iPod. As the name suggests, bass response is excellent but is surprisingly well delivered with a good solid thump as opposed to a less well defined rumble that another brand of popular in ear phones seems to provide. Again across the soundstage, everything sounded very good and given the relatively low price point, these consumer level earphones deliver an excellent sound – better than I have experienced to date. David Gray’s ‘This Years Love’ encoded using Apple’s Lossless codec sounded especially warm and rich with great vocals and violin mixing well with the smooth piano bass – probably better than it should at this price point.
Screenshot
Included in the package is the modawrap cable manager and a choice of three sizes of silicon ear inserts ensuring a good fit. I found these earphones very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time and with the good seal of the correct size of insert, excellent bass response and little intrusion from outside noise. These earphones really do offer a full step up in audio delivery over the standard earbuds and for me, sound better than competing in ear canal style earphones at this price range. This seems like a no brainer purchase for anyone looking to get maximum audio quality for a reasonably small investment.

Kensington PilotBoard Wireless Desktop mini review

Kensington have brought out their PilotBoard range of keyboard and mouse sets, designed with multimedia and ease of use in mind and we take a look at the middle of the line, PilotBoard Wireless Desktop.
Included in the package is the keyboard and mouse, the wireless transmitter, an attachable wrist rest, user guide, CD-ROM and batteries. The keyboard and mouse both take 2 AA batteries each which gives an estimated lifespan of 2 - 3 months for moderate to heavy daily use before needing replaced. Use of the supplied drivers is optional as the majority of features are already supported under Windows XP although there are a couple of missing features that I will touch on later.
Setting up the wireless set is very straight forward; the wireless transmitter unit can be plugged directly into the keyboard and mouse PS2 ports or into a single USB port using the supplied PS2 to USB adapter. This flexible arrangement allows this set to be used in conjunction with relatively old PCs or Macs, USB only systems or a laptop with only a single PS2 port. Once this unit is plugged into the PC, XP will automatically install its own drivers and have it ready use in no time at all. At this point, you may be able to use the keyboard and mouse correctly. If one or both components are not correctly picked up, you simply push the small button on the bottom of the transmitter and do the same on the bottom of the component that is not recognised and they will establish a working connection.
In use, the keyboard and mouse feel well constructed although the keyboard is very light which is great if you consider you can sit back with your feet up and work with it on your lap. The keys feel soft to use and quiet in operation which makes this setup a good choice for use in a family room where others will not be distracted by the sound of typing. Operation response is instant; there were no delays at all in use of the mouse and keyboard during the whole time of testing and I experienced no interference with my wireless network or phone system.
The mouse did feel substantial in hand compared to others, but I think this was in part due to the placement of the scroll wheel. While the buttons were easily accessible, the scroll wheel when holding the mouse comfortably seemed too far forward and had me stretching my index finger to operate. This takes a bit of getting used to but I have never had this issue before therefore I think this is one mouse that perhaps would not be easy for the children.
Screenshot
The supplied drivers were straight forward to install however I think many users will not have the need to install them. Using the standard XP drivers, all the main controls on the keyboard worked fine including the additional buttons such as for putting the PC in standby, starting up applications like your browser and Email or for controlling media playback. I was also surprised to see the excellent volume dial at the top, centre of the keyboard worked fine under this driver as did the scroll wheel on the left side and the browser forward and back buttons. There are additional benefits to installing the supplied driver however such as the ability to map two programmable application buttons, use the Function button to deliver common short cuts in applications and to switch the keyboard scroll wheel between zoom and magnify functions. The Function button in combination with other keys mostly replicates menu shortcuts that are already present in many applications like Open, Save etc. so the benefit of this option is limited. A real plus of the supplied driver however is the ability to see when the current battery level in the keyboard and mouse is getting low meaning the batteries will need replacing.
The keyboard is height adjustable and has small rubber feet to keep it secure on a smooth surface and the mouse has a fine, rubber coating making it comfortable in the hand. The positioning of the mouse scroll wheel is a consideration if children will be using this system but if you like to hook up your PC to a large screen TV or use a Media Centre, the PilotBoard offers a great quality and value keyboard and mouse set. It certainly gets my vote for people looking for a wireless setup.

iRhythms A303 iPod Speaker Dock mini review

With the increasing market for in home speaker solutions, finding the right system for your needs should prove easier than ever provided you are willing to invest a little time in research.
A popular design is to have a single unit that includes an iPod dock sandwiched between two speakers making it relatively compact and easy to move between rooms as required. The A303 from iRhythms is one such system and looks more polished with its black finish in person than it does in a picture. For iPod purists, this system is also available in white as the A302 model.
The feature set on the A303 is good for a speaker system covering all the main areas you will require; this will charge any dock enabled iPod, uses a remote control, and includes a 3.5mm line in for the Shuffle or other audio source.
Included in the box along with the user guide and power supply are various dock inserts to fit different iPods. I really like these inserts as they have a support that goes up the back of the iPod adding stability to the smaller iPods such as the nano where the back of the iPod would not normally sit flush against the main unit. Speaking of the nano, the new 2nd gen nano is the only device that is not properly supported by an included insert but thankfully the iRhythms supports Apple universal dock inserts which means the one that ships with your nano will work just fine.
The remote control that ships is Infrared but works very well with a straight line of sight for about six to seven metres, certainly enough to cover the distance of a medium sized room. The remote will control power on/off, volume, play/pause and skip/seek. Unfortunately, the iPod menu system is not supported so you still need some physical interaction with the iPod when it comes to teeing up the majority of your music unless you create a suitably large play list up front. It would be easier to do this via the remote control than fiddle with the click wheel while the iPod is docked or continually remove it so it is a shame this feature is missing.
From an audio stand point, I must admit to being very impressed with the A303. Due to the size of the unit, I wasn’t expecting a particularly powerful sound but was impressed right from first use with the room filling ability of this speaker system. It will easily satisfy the needs for music in any room in the house and doesn’t exhibit any obvious signs of distortion at comfortably high levels of music. Bass response was also very impressive which is a real bonus for many as this system relays the bass element of dance or rock music very well. That is not to say the system fails to deliver for other genres, far from it as I have been very impressed with the audio output across all musical styles, I just find that this is well tuned to deliver good but firm bass which is impressive in such a relatively small cabinet. Midrange and highs are equally well realised but perhaps doesn’t have the same impact as the unexpected low levels given the size of the unit. A small point I did notice though was some audible amplifier hiss during silent sections when you are very close to the speaker but this is never an issue when music is playing or you are any kind of distance from the system.
One area that left me a little surprised is that there is no quick way to power the device on from standby without the remote control. If you lost the remote control, you would need to switch the unit off at the back and then back on again or remove and reseat the iPod to play music from standby; not a problem though if you are careful with such a small remote and there is a handy storage slot on the back of the system to hold the remote when not in use. Volume controls are present on the system next to the iPod itself but adding a standby by button here would have made sense to me. The system doesn’t feature any additional connections for video or USB pass through which are things that I don’t consider necessary for a speaker system although they would still be a nice to have for some.
Screenshot
The iRhythms is well constructed and actually feels sturdier than it looks – presumably this helps to deliver its impressive sound. It is certainly not a bad looking unit either and even the power on light switches subtly from red to blue depending on the system’s state; a small but important factor when considering the A303 for a bedroom.
For those looking for a compact but very impressive sounding speaker system that can be controlled via remote and will also charge their iPod, the iRhythms really has to be very high on your list. I imagine the majority of households will find the A302/A303 to be a great addition and there really is nothing to mark against this system. Adding iPod menu support to the remote control would have brought this speaker system very close to perfection but currently it represents a great purchase.

Kensington launch their 4 in 1 Car Charger for iPod

Kensington, the computer accessories company, has launched the 4 in 1 Car Charger for iPod®, enabling users to sync and charge their iPods while still using accessories such as FM transmitters.
The device charges any click wheel iPod or USB-powered device, such as iPod shuffles, mobile phones and PDAs, via a car cigarette lighter. The 4-in-1 Car Charger’s detachable USB 2.0 adapter also means it can be used to sync and charge an iPod at home or in the office.
The charger also has a pass-through dock connector, which allows the use of iPod accessories, such as FM transmitters, at the same time as the device is being charged. In addition, users can charge USB powered devices in their car with the addition of a USB device-specific cable (not included).
If you are torn between charging your iPod or using a dock connector accessory, now you can do both at the same time. This seems like a handy tool for road going iPod lovers. Expect the 4 in 1 Car Charger to be available shortly from your iPod stockist or at the Kensington website.
